This morning, Panasonic officially announced what we all knew was coming: the brand new GH5 will be shipping in early 2017. I only wish it were sooner. The big reveal is the GH5 will shoot 10-bit 4:2:2 4K video at 24/30fps internally. Yes, internally. No Ninja, no Shogun, no Genesis, no external recorder required. Oh yeah, it'll also shoot 4K at 60p...albeit in 8-bit. This is a big upgrade and underlines how unimpressive the video specs are on Canon's recently released 5D Mark IV. Why are we even talking about Canon anymore? No idea.
Years back, I dumped my 7D for a GH3 and there was no question which camera had far better video. I've since had the GH4 for over 2 years and it's been a professional workhorse I've used on many broadcast TV shows. Not only have I been shooting my second feature film with it, I also used it to shoot all the slow motion and gimbal footage for Dead Set on Life, the Viceland TV series I worked on as the Showrunner:
In addition, we used my GH4 to shoot all the hero shots for the opening title sequence of OLN's Polar Bear Town:
This camera has been a beast. In the dead of winter at -40, in light rain, in scorching summer heat and even out on the open seas, the GH4 always performed exceptionally well. It never overheated, never froze (nor did the LCD), the battery life always impressed, and the image was outstanding, particularly for a $1,500 camera. Now...it's even better. Significantly better. For me, the GH5 is a no-brainer upgrade.
