It seems the message sent is "Baseball: The Business" is more important to MLB than "Baseball: The National Pastime" but maybe that's not true. When the Olympic Committee decided in 2008 that baseball would no longer be an Olympic sport, the WBC was created with the hope that the sport would continue to grow worldwide, and it definitely has.
In 2016 it was announced that baseball would make its return in the 2020 Summer Olympics and I'm not sure what this means for the WBC. The fervor for the WBC might not be palpable in the US but the point was to expand the game beyond our borders meaning maybe we need to go beyond our perception of the tournament and start thinking globally.
In contrast with the WBC's timing, the Olympics conflict with MLB's regular season which means there should be almost 0% attrition due to contract obligations. The lack of established MLB superstars is a clear signal that the Olympic teams will be more of a youth movement but my main question is, what cap will the US Olympic team wear???
This is the logo that is seen on Team USA's jersey and as far as I know they haven't worn this cap during a WBC game. |
Over the past few years, New Era has scaled back production on USA-made caps while increasing the number of caps made in China |
The Team USA store has a fair amount of variety in the caps that it sells. Like the cap posted above, every one of them has the US flag on the back of the cap with the exception of the 2017 WBC cap. |
